How to strategically rocket your Twitter followers

Unless you are a red carpet celebrity or a mega brand, creating a Twitter profile is certainly not a case of “build it and they will come”. Organically attracting a large following on social media can be a bit of a slow burn. Fortunately there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The tips and tricks outlined in this post will not only help you accelerate the growth of your Twitter following, but will help you identify the Twitter users that matter the most for your business.

STEP 1 – Have a good Twitter page

It sound obvious, but it’s really essential. The first thing you need to focus on is to ensure that your twitter page is actually worth following. This means everything from ensuring the presentation is slick with an engaging logo and hero image. While also being mindful that the content you tweet is both relevant to your target audience, updated regularly and managed with love and care. Identifying the key stakeholders within your community and engaging and sharing with their content regularly is also important.

STEP 2 – Use Tweepi to follow your stakeholder’s followers

I believe there are a few different tools out there, which are helpful for following and unfollowing quickly and effectively, I personally use a tool called Tweepi. Here is how I use it. I begin by creating a list of my top 50 relevant stakeholders (which you should already have if you’re doing step 1 properly). Tweepi then allows you to do two things: Follow a stakeholder’s followers or follow a stakeholder’s friends. I recommend you do both, and systematically work your way down your list one by one.

A couple of quick tips: It is helpful to note that you should turn ‘bio’ on as an active column. This will improve your visibility, and assist you to follow the right people. It is also possible to add filters to your search dashboard. I always turn on the filter ‘neither’, which means that the filtered options available do not already follow, nor are you already following them. There are other filters you can play around with to help ease the process, however this is the set up I presently use and am happy with it.

STEP 3 – Unfollow to help keep your follower count down

Now you may be asking, if we follow all these people won’t my follower count soar up horrifically? Yes it will, however the great additional thing about tweepi is it allows you to also rapidly unfollow followers who don’t follow you back after a certain number of days (I personally set it to 11 days). This tends to therefore keep your following count down to a reasonable level as your follower count steadily grows.

By combining both strategic following and unfollowing, alongside focusing on creating quality content to attract followers organically, you will be able to boost your follower numbers up at a impressive and sustainable rate.
